How easy is it for an unpopular person move to a new school and be the coolest/most well known kid there?

like in the movies..do you know anyone who changed their image when they moved somewhere? I know an old friend f mine was kind of a geek and didn't have many friends and no girls would appreciate him flirting with them, he was a loner at my school. Then, he moved to another state and he's apparently pretty popular/cool/well-liked now and even has a hot girlfriend, a band and tons of people write on his facebook. He has over a thousand friends there and tons of albums of him partying with good-looking people. He changed his looks/style and thinks he's some GQ model now lol. It's so weird how different his life is now, but i'm happy for him.
